You may have heard of a little book called One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp. This New York Times’ bestselling book still tops lists a couple of years after its release. Ann challenges women to embrace life as they know it, count their blessings and appreciate the everyday. I heard her speak at the She Speaks conference in 2011, and she speaks with the same poetic language she uses in her book. That’s the real Ann.
To contrast, the real Leslie has a bent toward sarcasm and teasing. I tend to poke fun at most things–including myself. (Better to laugh than cry, right?) That tendency is one reason I wanted to co-author a book called One Thousand Gift Receipts: A Holi-Devo. (Other reasons include the fact that I thought it would encourage women to focus more on Jesus during the holidays, as well as provide them a brief respite in their otherwise hectic days.)
Some of my other proposed titles include:
- Mommy, the Witch with the Wardrobe
- Your Best Midlife Now
- Lord of the Teething Rings
- The Chronicles of Hernia
- The Hungry Games: 3 A.M. Feedings and Other Challenges of Motherhood
See what I’ve done there? Hardly original, I prefer to tweak what someone else has already done well. Call me the Weird Al of nonfiction.
To me, humor is essential in life. We can’t take everything so seriously or life becomes more overwhelming than it already is. So, lighten up, laugh at yourself, find the humor in life–even negative circumstances.
And, by all means, please share your funny titles with me. Then I won’t have to work so hard to come up with them.
